Summer is usually the time of Fringe Festivals all over the world. This year is a little bit different, but I wanted to share some similarities between theatre and branding, to get you in the spirit regardless!
Collaborative
There are a lot of moving parts in branding and in theatre. In theatre, you have your actors, and sometimes musicians who are front and centre, but you have an entire stage crew, director, lighting and sound technicians who are also helping the story come to life. Plus there’s an entire crew doing leg work before you see the show — costume and prop makers to name a few!
Branding is just as multi-faceted. Yes, you probably have a director (brand strategist) pointing you in the right direction, but the execution of a brand takes a lot of different people. Printers, web developers, social media strategists, copywriters, ad buyers and more!
Genres/Aesthetics
What’s your favourite theatre to go see? Do you like a good comedy that has you rolling in the aisles? If you’re like me musical theatre is your favourite — I could belt out Broadway tunes all day. Maybe you like something more dramatic, like Hamlet. It’s hard to say you don’t like theatre when there’s something for everyone!
Graphic design has many different genres (styles) too. You can use your branding to attract the right audience for you. Sometimes people want someone serious and ready to get down to business, like lawyers. Sometimes they want something fun, or family-friendly. Tailor your visuals and messaging so people know who to expect from your very time.
Old AF
Theatre and acting aren’t new. I think sometimes we take the arts for granted especially when it comes to a dollar value (why do actors get paid so much, why are we funnelling so much into the arts, etc) but we love the escapism of it. Theatre has been around forever and it’s not going anywhere any time soon.
Branding originated centuries ago when craftspeople would mark their products with a symbol to show origins and quality. People would be loyal to the artisan that made their favourite pots or tools or bred the best cows. We all like to do business with people we like, but we can’t always get to know every single customer personally. Branding can bridge between you, your business and your customers and develop that relationship even when you can’t be around.
What do you love about the theatre? What’s the best Fringe show you’ve ever seen? What are some of your favourite brands?
