Say “NO” to Logo Comparison

Which of these logos do you prefer? Leave a comment below!

Have you ever seen these logo comparison posts on Facebook or LinkedIn? I see them a lot, probably because of the feedback loop that is on the internet because of my job. Amongst hundreds of comments, I always leave mine that reads along the lines of “It doesn’t matter what I like, who is your target market?”

In the sea of comments, I would not be surprised if mine was mostly ignored but I do hope that someone sees it and stops to think. I want to shout at the screen “DO NOT CROWDSOURCE YOUR LOGO”. At the end of the day, it is not what the general internet likes, it matters what your client likes. These posts are void of any information about a target market. If any details are given it’s usually about the business.

The most successful businesses put their customers first. It’s not about how great their product or service is, it’s about how it can make their customers’ life better (and that the customer is worthy of having a better life).

When you know these details:

  • Who is your ideal customer
  • Who your business is for them (brand characteristics and brand archetype)
  • The problem you’re solving for them with your product/service

Then you don’t need to crowdsource your logo or brand colours or company name. The solution rises to the surface. If you’re still doubting, or debating between some options, absolutely get opinions, but only get opinions from your ideal customer(s). Everything else is superfluous.

Logo Preferences in the Real World

If you are a toy manufacturer making a product for 8-year-old girls, why does it matter what a 52-year-old man thinks? You might consult with him about the price point, as he might buy it for his granddaughter, but features, colours, marketing, etc he really doesn’t need to have an opinion on. When you crowdsource to the internet, you are getting these outlier opinions influencing your brand.

a/b test can be a great way to do a logo comparison

Crowdsourcing anything on this big of a scale is tough. Go watch an episode of “Say Yes to the Dress”. You’ll never make everyone happy and you will get a lot of conflicting information. When you can look at your logo and brand through the eyes of your dream customer, it eliminates this conflicting information and you can be confident in your choices.
