3 Problems with Canva Logos

Don’t Limit Your Business Brand

Canva has become a hugely popular graphic and image editing software. It is a browser-based editor that provides you with endless options to make posters, banners, social media posts, and more. With Canva being so easy-to-use, Canva logos have seen a huge boost in popularity among the small business community.

However, we highly recommend against getting a Canva logo for your business, and not just because we’re a bit biased. There are some inherent problems with Canva logos that if you aren’t familiar with graphic usage and copyright–you could see yourself in a bind in the future.

Here are 3 reasons why we recommend against using Canva.

The graphics are available to everyone, everywhere.

Part of a great logo design is that it’s unique. It stands out in the market and no one else has a logo that looks like yours. That’s where big corporations see a ton of success. The iconic mermaid logo for Starbucks, the golden arches for McDonald’s. No other coffee or fast food company looks quite like them, and that not only makes them stand out but gives their brand value.
The resources on Canva are universally available. There’s no guarantee that you won’t create a logo similar to someone else’s. It will make your brand look cheap in the long run.
You might be concerned that if you create a logo that looks like someone else’s it could be copyright infringement… which brings us to our next point

You do not own the copyright to anything created in Canva.

Because everything is universally available on Canva, you do not own the copyright, Canva does. This means you’ll never be able to trademark your logo, and you won’t have a leg to stand on if someone has a logo similar to yours.
While this might seem like no big deal when you’re starting out, as your business and brand build equity you will want something that is yours. That way if you ever want to sell or transfer your business, there is an inherent value and price you can put on your branding.

Your logo will not be in the right format.

This is one we see a lot, and not even just from Canva logos, but any inexpensive logo supplier where the business owner might not know what to be asking or looking for. Your logo needs to be in a vector format. Vectors can be scaled to any size without losing resolution. That means they’ll look great on a business card, and look great on a billboard. If you don’t get your logo in a vector format, at some point in your business you will be paying a designer anyway to redo it. You may as well get it done right the first time!

canva logos come from an image library

If you’re still wanting to DIY your logo, we recommend using high-quality vector graphic software like Adobe Illustrator. This will ensure that you get the right file type, that it’s totally unique to you, and that you own them as well!
